ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM, PILLALAMARRI
The
District Archaeological Museum, Pillalamarri, established in 1976, is a
significant cultural landmark located just 3 km from Mahbubnagar town. Situated
across from the legendary 700-year-old Pillalamarri Banyan Tree, the museum
offers a peaceful and academic atmosphere for exploring the region's vast
archaeological timeline.
Historical Significance & Evolution
- Establishment:
Founded in 1976 on a one-acre site to preserve the heritage of the
Mahbubnagar district.
- Original Collection:
The museum initially housed stone sculptures retrieved from local
historical sites such as Poodur, Vaddeman, Kalwakol, and Gollathagudi.
- Chronological Range:
The artifacts on display represent a broad historical spectrum, dating
from the 6th century C.E. to the 16th century C.E.
Exhibits and Galleries
The
museum's collection is spread across two primary buildings and an outdoor
garden:
- Stone Sculptures:
There are 120 stone sculptures currently on display within the main
building and the adjacent landscaped garden. An additional 80 loose
sculptures are held in the museum's stores.
- Specialized Collections:
A secondary building features a diverse array of artifacts, including
prehistoric tools, ancient coins, bronzes, and various arms and weapons.
- Regional Heritage:
Many items were sourced from the Amirabad region of Mahbubnagar, with
supplemental pieces acquired from the State Museum in Hyderabad.

The museum attracts approximately 40,000 visitors annually, serving as a
key educational and tourist hub.
