KOLANUPAKA SITE MUSEUM

The Site Museum at Kolanupaka, located in the Yadadri-Bhongir district, preserves the rich legacy of a village that served as a major political and religious epicenter between the 10th and 13th centuries CE. Historically known as Kollipaka, the region flourished under the successive rule of the Rashtrakutas, the Western Chalukyas of Kalyani, and the Kakatiyas of Warangal.

Historical & Religious Significance

• A Confluence of Faiths: Kolanupaka holds a unique position as a premier center for both Jainism and Saivism. During the 11th century, it was ranked alongside eminent Jain centers like Ellora.
• The Seat of Virasaivism: According to literary traditions, Kolanupaka is the birthplace of Renukacharya, a celebrated Virasaiva saint. It is believed he emerged from the Svayambhu Linga at this site and was later absorbed back into it after a lifetime of spiritual preaching.
• Monastic Legacy: The village remains a pilgrimage destination, housing significant religious monuments that reflect its medieval glory.

Architectural Monuments

The village is home to three primary temple complexes dating from the 11th to 13th centuries:

1.    Jaina Temple (Svetambara): A beautifully renovated temple currently managed by the Jaina Trust and remains a vibrant center of worship.

2.    Someswara Group of Temples: A cluster of Saiva shrines and Mathas (monasteries). These are protected monuments under the Department of Archaeology & Museums.

3.    Veeranarayana Swamy Temple: Located within the village, this historic shrine is also a government-protected monument.

The Site Museum

Established in the 1970s within the corridor of the Sri Someswara Swamy Temple, the museum was created to house the vast number of stone sculptures and inscriptions discovered in and around the village.

• Sculptural Wealth: The collection features masterpieces from the Western Chalukya and Kakatiya periods, showcasing the intricate craftsmanship of the medieval Deccan.
• Rare Artifacts: A notable highlight is the rare sculpture of Matsyavallabha, alongside various inscriptions that provide vital historical data regarding the dynasties that once ruled Kollipaka.
