ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM, WARANGAL
Located
in the historic heart of the former Kakatiya capital, the District
Archaeological Museum, Warangal serves as a prestigious cultural center
dedicated to preserving the artifacts and relics of a glorious past. Originally
known as Orugallu, Warangal flourished as the seat of the Kakatiya Dynasty
between the 12th and 14th centuries C.E., leaving behind a legacy of
architectural marvels and grand monuments.
Historical Significance & Architecture
- Inauguration:
The museum was officially opened on February 22, 1991.
- Design:
Set amidst sprawling, landscaped gardens, the facility includes a large
hall, three rooms, and an enclosed gallery.
- The Greeting Nandi:
Visitors are welcomed at the entrance by a massive 13th-century black
basalt Nandi. This typical Kakatiya-style sculpture is renowned for its
intricate filigree work, muvvalapatteda (girth band), and flared
nostrils that evoke a sense of power and vigor.
Major Collections & Attractions
The
museum houses an extensive variety of exhibits spanning millions of years, from
prehistoric fossils to medieval weaponry:
- Stone Sculptures:
Masterpieces include the 7th-century Ashtabhuja Chamunda, an
11th-century Parsvanatha in black basalt, and images of Saraswati,
Ganesha, and Yogi Chennakeshava.
- Coins & Inscriptions:
A diverse central gallery features rare coins in gold, silver, and copper
from the Satavahana, Roman, Kakatiya, and Qutb Shahi periods. Notable
inscriptions include one by Kakatiya Mahadeva dated 1197 C.E.
- Arms & Artillery:
The museum displays instruments of war, including huge bronze and iron
cannons from the 18th century, cannonballs from Zaffargadh fort, and a
"RanaBheri" (war drum) used to rally troops.
- Prehistoric & Ancient Wonders:
Exhibits include wood fossils dating back 2.5 million years, Paleolithic
hand axes, and Neolithic pottery. A standout item is a finely detailed
Bodhisattva terracotta idol.
- Decorative Arts:
Collections of Bidriware, Celadonware, Enamelware, and Deccani paintings
offer a glimpse into the region's artistic evolution.
