Conservation work to Koulas fort near Kaulas (v), Bichkunda (m)

History

The village Kaulas is a historical place, situated in Jukkal Mandal of Nizambad Dist. It lies about 98 km from Nizambad and 10 km from Jukkal, on the way to Hyderabad from Banswada. According to local tradition, the Kaulas were originally called ‘Kailas,’ as five Sivalingas were established by the Kakatiya rulers in five corners. The Kaulas, Bodhan, and Nizambad kingdoms together were called INDUR in ancient times.

 

          Kailash Fort was constructed at the present site by Rashtrakutas during the 9th century A.D. The Fort was captured by the Chalukyas of Kalyani in the third quarter of the 10th century A.D. The mud fort was later captured by Kakatiyas of Warangal and it was part of Kakatiya kingdom till A.D.1323. After the advent of the Muslims the fort was successively under the control of the Bahamanis. Qutb Shahis, Naikwaries, Mughals, Maratas and finally Asafjahis. Raja Gopal Singh Gour was appointed as Raja of Koulas and his successors held this fort till 1947 A.D

         

          The Fort is approximately one kilometer in length and seven hundred meters in width. It has 52 bastions (the prominent bastions are Hussaini, Mallika, Mula and Kadika Burz), three temples- (Venkateswara temple, Ramalayam and Mahadev Temple), two mosques, five wells four granaries and other structures such as Rani Mahal, Elephant well (Enugulabavi) etc.

 

          The Jagdamba Bhawani cannon, also known as Navgarji tope, is the largest canon of the world of its time. Raja Gopal Singh made it in 1728 A.D. There are five more cannons inside the Fort.
